What ice cream and float trips teach us
We all build our lives day-by-day with habits or patterns.
➡️ We drive the same way to and from work.
➡️ We make dinner the same nights of the week.
➡️ We wake up each morning and go through our morning routine.
All those things are taking you somewhere. And the slightest shift starts changing things.
To lay it out as an example we can all probably relate to...
- The shift to stop your morning walk when it gets too hot outside.
- And the shift to swing by the ice cream parlor, when it seems like a fun summer treat with the family.
Those small shifts begin to take you in a different direction.
The abandonment of the walk, followed by weekly visits for ice cream take a toll. Combined, they change the amount of movement your body's getting AND your caloric intake.
And those two small shifts alone could have your body feeling and looking very different by the end of the summer.
(Plus, if your body responds to dairy like mine does, you're probably not feeling that great. Which means it changes your sleep patterns. Which means it changes your energy levels. And so forth.)
Sometimes, there are shifts we haven't chosen. Life happens TO us. Maybe you're caring for aging parents, or have a new baby.
The momentum shifts there too. You go in a new direction.
If you've spent any time at one of my Momentum Resets, you might've heard me say that I have never been on a float trip. (For those who don't know what that is, it's a Midwest thing, y'all.)

So on a float trip (or so I've heard), you drive your vehicle upstream, get in a raft on the river, and then ride/float the current downstream.
And depending on your planning and actions, the amount of time it takes to get downriver will vary...along with your experience.
- The time of year will affect how hot (and sunburnt) you get. Or whether the water will be refreshing...or freezing.
- Your river choice will affect how peaceful or party-like the atmosphere will be.
- Your start time will affect how many other floaters will be around you (and how drunk they are).
- How much weight (people, snacks, activities, and beer) in your raft will affect how fast you go.
- How many people are in your group, whether they're in separate rafts, whether they're acting like herded cats or are all pulling in the same direction, and whether they want or need to make stops along the way — also shift things.
(Ooh, that last one. Just like life, right?)
All that affects your experience along the way, when you get to the end, and what shape you'll be in when you get there.
Whether a float trip or a business goal, the amount of momentum happening is based on the choices we're making.
So when people ask me, "Dawn, why are you so passionate about taking a Momentum Reset? What really happens there?"...
...I have personally seen (and lived) the changes that happen when people invest time in making intentional choices.
When you get into alignment with who you are, and set aside time to take intentional steps, you get to where you want to go...and have the experience you want along the way.
That's why I get excited about the Momentum Reset.
So whether or not you're joining us tomorrow (there's still time to register) one of the things I want to invite you to do is do give some consideration to:
- What are some of those subtle shifts you've been making that are taking you in the wrong direction?
- What are some subtle shifts you could make that would take you in a better direction?
- Where is your current momentum (or lack thereof) taking you?
If it's not taking you where you want to go and you're looking to have a conversation about that, I'd be happy to do that with you.
It may not be as hard as you think that it is to get on track.
You just need the skillset and guidance to make some subtle shifts in your life, and then do that consistently over time.
Thanks for doing life with me,
Dawn
