You might be looking a little too closely...

Have you ever stood so close to a painting that all you could see were the brushstrokes?

No shape, no color, just… texture? That was me this morning, but with my own life.

I was leaning in so close to a couple of specific things, that everything else in my peripheral was starting to blur.

Do you ever do that? You get so focused on one problem, one goal, or one "stuck" spot that it becomes your entire world.

And when we’re that close to the canvas, we can’t actually see the whole picture.

So my word for you today is simple...

(⬇️ Btw, watch instead of reading, or read on below.)

You might be looking a little too closely...

Back up. (Okay, that's two words.)

That thing you’re fixated on? It’s not going anywhere.

When you create some distance between yourself and that "one thing" you’re obsessing over, a few things happen...

  • You see the connections: You realize that the "one thing" is part of a bigger thing that your time is better spent on. Or there's a solution from a past problem that it makes sense to use.
  • You see your tools: You remember the resources, people, and strengths you have at hand to help solve the "one thing", rather than continuing to mull it over and over in your head.
  • You see what's neglected: You often realize that while you’ve been over-watering your "one thing," other vital areas of your life—your rest, your relationships, or your big-picture goals—are parched.
  • The "story" shrinks: That "one thing"? It’s just one data point in a much bigger, much more beautiful life. (And maybe it's not even the thing you really need to be focusing on.)

Hyper-fixation feels like "focus," but often it’s just a sneaky way of putting on blinders and ignoring the more important things.

Let’s do a quick check-in together:

  • What "one thing" is currently taking up 90% of your mental real estate?
  • If you backed up ten feet, what other things would come into focus?

Don't miss the big picture because you're too busy staring at a single scuff on the wall.

Blessings,

Dawn

It’s not the big obstacle. It’s the small leaks.
I often invite other coaches and professionals in similar industries as me to sit in on my Momentum Reset workshops to give me feedback. And without fail, each time even they (coaches themselves!) leave finding clarity on something that has been getting in their way. Funny enough, it's usually the same things getting in the way for everyone: I call it leaking.  We think we aren’t taking ground ...
Why you're actually stuck
So often, we confuse movement with "taking ground." Like you're trying to run a race in storm, but are so busy dodging downed branches and fixating on the squelching in your shoes that you veer off the main path...away from the finish line. You're moving, but you're not getting to where you need to be. Most of the time, not taking ground isn't from lacking motivation; it's because we’re overloa...
Scrolling vs. a blank Google Doc (Which are you choosing?)
I've been having so much fun lately making social posts.  So this morning, I got into my office a bit early and thought "Ooh, maybe I should jump in and do some of that right now." But then I remembered something that James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, said at a conference I attended with him the other year. He said he wins his day by what he does his first 5 minutes in the office. He comes ...
